John Shipley was born in Knaresborough, in the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1932. He was educated at the King James’ Grammar School, Knaresborough. He then studied at the Harrogate School of Art for the National Diploma in Design (Mural Painting). National Service in the Royal Signals followed. He then won a County Major Scholarship to the Royal College of Art to study graphic design. In 1958 he joined the staff of the West of England College of Art, Bristol. He has exhibited at the Royal West of England Academy and his freelance work includes designs for British Rail, BBC Television, Courage Western, John Smith’s and Harvey’s of Bristol. He became West of England art critic for the Manchester Guardian and Arts News & Review. For seven years he served on the standing advisory committee to the Associated Examining Board monitoring GCE, A and O Level papers in photography. He retired as Senior Lecturer and Honorary Research Fellow, Bristol Polytechnic in 1988. He was elected an Artist Member of the Bristol Savages in 1991 and became President 1997. (J.S) |
