Born in Bristol, June 1940. Educated at Redland Hill House and the West of England College of Art. Apprenticed at E. and A. Robinson in 1957 as a Designer and Reproduction Artist. Became a Teacher at Brunel Technical College and latterly Senior Tutor in Graphic Design, and a freelance book designer and illustrator. Paints mainly in oils and gouache; his work is primarily landscapes and seascapes. He has exhibited in a number of galleries in the West Country, including the RWA. Most of his work has been executed in Somerset and the Cotswolds. Because of his Cotswold work he became a founder member of the Dobunni Painters with Michael Edwards. The group exhibit in galleries across the Cotswolds. Michael has had several one-man shows, the most notable of which was at the Amersham Galleries entitled "The Royal Cotswolds". He has Marine Paintings in the John Hill Marine Collection, Charles Hill and Sons, ship builders in Bristol. His work has also been sold nationally and internationally through the Michael Stewart Galleries of Wrington, near Bristol, and more recently in print form through Marcus Publications. He has worked on paintings of Gloucestershire and Ireland, published in 2003. He has a freelance business in graphics and illustration and is an associate member of the Chartered Society of Designers. His greatest illustration success was The Evolution of Mammals published in 1986 by the Natural History Museum, London. The Book was copiously illustrated and was sold world-wide. Translated into Japanese and Spanish, it sold particularly well in America. In 1996 he had a one-man exhibition in the Bristol City Art Gallery of illustrations from the book. He has always enjoyed singing and music in general and he played for the Bristol Jazz Band the Blue Notes between 1958 and 1962 as a bass player. He has also played from time to time with other Bristol Savage musicians, including Peter Harrison and Derek Joynson. In 2004, undertook the mural in the apse of The Holy Nativity Church, Knowle, Bristol, extending an existing mosaic, depicted in Italian Renaissance style, the Nativity and the three Kings. President 1976, 1983, and for the Centenary Year 2003-2004, following which he was made a Life Member.
