CULPAN, Terry* PDF Print E-mail

Terry became a member of the Bristol Savages in late 1993, shortly after moving down to Bristol. He had always had a keen interest in Naval Architecture and, living most of his life on the Yorkshire Coast, it seemed natural for him to specialise in marine subjects, and at the invitation of the Ministry of Defence, spent some time at sea with the Royal Navy as guest artist during North Sea exercises. In the 1980s he was working as an engineer in Saudi Arabia where he began painting local scenery, which helped him to broaden his work to include landscape and architectural subjects. On his return to the UK he returned to painting marine subjects again, but, after working amongst his fellow Savages on a Wednesday evening, he gradually returned to painting landscape subjects with renewed vigour. Forced into early retirement from his full time occupation in 2001, he studied for teaching qualification and began running his own art classes as well as teaching through the local community education service. His work is regularly accepted by the Royal Society of Marine Artists' exhibitions in the UK. In the Artists' USA he is currently being represented by the Mystic Seaport Marine Gallery for whom he is a core group artist and also by the J. Russell Jinishian Gallery in Fairfield, Connecticut.  In 2006 he received the prestigious 'Thomas Wells Award' at the International Marine Art Exhibition in Mystic Port.
